Random Object Friday

Creative inspiration can be found anywhere. I just never thought that I would ever see it come from one of our usual Netflix, Panda Express eating Friday nights on the couch.

And then we watched Frida. Next thing I know Mario walks throught the door with a $15 art kit from Wal-Mart and some blank canvases from Michaels. Michaels?!? I didn't even know he shopped at Michaels!

And now, Mario paints.

They're actually not half bad though, Mario's paintings. They're quite nice and waaay better than anything I could ever paint that's for sure. Tracing is more my forte. I think I just might break into Mario's $15 art kit and steal some colored pencils to trace so I can feel like a cool artist too! Which leads me to the next installment of Random Object Friday.

Here I took some of his colored pencils and photographed a few angles much like would photograph different details on a wedding day.

As I mentioned in last weeks Random Object Friday I like to shoot important details in different angles to have a few shots to choose from in post. Below on the left is a simple vertical shot and on the right is a little bit more creative vertical shot. Left 50mm 1.4,  f1.4, 1/200 shutterspeed, iso 200. Right 50mm 1.4, f1.4, 1/320 shutterspeed, iso 200.

Here i moved the pencils onto the floor of my kitchen next to the patio door for nicer light. It's worth noting that none of these images were shot using flash. I simply moved my subject toward the more flattering light and that is exactly what I do also on a wedding day.  I avoid using flash as much as possible, not saying that's the way everyone ought to shoot, just my taste.

Here, the sunlight from the door on the right illuminates my subject just how I like it with nice soft natural light. The rest of these images were also shot with higher iso's just to push my camera and see how well it does with noise and I'm quite happy with the crisp results. Left and Right 50mm 1.4, f2.8, 1/400 shutterspeed, 800iso
Another horizontal variation 50mm 1.4, f2.8, 1/400 shutterspeed, 800iso

Vertical shot from the front of the pencils positioned in the same way as the shot above. 50mm 1.4, f2.8, 1/500 shutterspeed, 800iso

Something else worth noting is that no in camera adjustments for saturation or any kind of in camera image enhancements were used to shoot these shots. I showed these images to a photographer friend and he asked me if I had used any of that. The truth is I'm not that savyy. I wish I was but I'm not. I shoot all of my images on auto white balance with no special adjustments. These shots are actually almost SOC or straight out of my camera with the exception of a small sharpen and maybe a 10% saturation increase on some. I also used the luminance tool in lightroom to reduce some of the noise on some images but other than that these are pretty much SOC.
